Empire State Manufacturing Index was much stronger than expected

1.16.2013

Top Day Market News

Yesterday the Beige Book was generally uninformative. Stocks took “no news” as good news and carried higher. The Producer Price Index was a bit hotter than forecast. Empire State Manufacturing Index was much stronger than expected while crude stocks were lower by 7.2 million barrels, lower than expected.

The Consumer price Index will be released today along with weekly jobless claims and the Philly Fed report. Overnight, the Aussie was hit on disappointing employment numbers.

The VIX or volatility index for equities has returned to extremely complacent levels.  Below is a weekly chart. Pay attention.
