U.S. oil rig count down three weeks in a row. Oil futures climbed back above $40 a barrel on Monday. This is the third straight week of declines in the number of U.S. rigs drilling for crude as well as numbers suggesting a stronger domestic and Chinese demand.
Gold mining stocks surged Monday, helped by a surge in gold prices. Gold prices have risen by more than 16% since hitting a six-year low in December.
U.S. stocks were trading higher, but off their best levels of the session, as oil futures rallied and the dollar trading lower against most of its rivals.
