Friday’s unemployment number came in below expectations and for the majority of the session it was “risk off.” Most asset classes were sold off except for bonds. The number wasn’t bad enough to immediately suggest that the Fed would be prompted to enter another round of stimulus, however. At around 2:30, a Wall Street journal article suggested that QE3 was still on the table and even though this wasn’t particularly fresh news, the particular source was credible enough for shorts to cover.
The big numbers this week will be coming out of China as they report GDP. Of course, they have just lowered interest rates twice in the past month so the anticipation is for week eco numbers.
Even with poor tape action over the past two sessions, the VIX closed at complacent levels.
After the bell, earnings season begins in earnest with Alocoa.
